Weekly Commentary with Wanda Don’t “Worry” be “Happy”
April 1, 2006 Welcome to the University of WORRY. We are readily available for people all over the world. I’m sure you will find our facility well worth your time, as you are the subject of our very uncaring campus. Yes, I agree, what a way to begin an article. There’s a combatant in all of us, just what we are willing to sacrifice is all up to us. I heard a sermon at church last Sunday and I want to share some very important views with you. I would like to thank Pastor John Ojuri of Redeemed Ministries in Farmington, NM for allowing me to share with all of you. As I sat and listened to the sermon, I had the overwhelming feeling that he must be talking directly to me! Have you ever been in a situation like that? It’s sometimes a bit uncomfortable isn’t it? The pastor was so keen with his words it made you stop and think even if you really didn’t want to. What is worry? Not a large word, not even an important word, but oh my- “how profound it is”. The dictionary defines worry as: “To feel or cause to feel uneasy or anxious.’ In laymen terms it simply means we are restless, walk the floor, don’t eat, can’t sleep, become physically ill that ends up promoting ill health or worse. The list goes on and on and on. All of us have been guilty of it so what can be done about this dreadful obsession we have? I say obsession because for myself, and many others I know that is what it becomes after we give worry a place to live and grow. It’s not that easy to be so carefree and have a smile on our face all day. When the gas company shows up to turn off the gas on a cold winters day, are we smiling? What about all the “worrying” we do when it comes to our children or grandchildren? It seems we have an automatic mechanism that kicks in and its name is “worry.” I don’t know about you, but I am beginning to see that all the worry I have put upon myself has never made my situation any better. It has actually made me a very negative person at times, and literally physically ill. Why does it happen? Because sometimes we just don’t know what to do, right? As pastor John put it, “It is very easy for us to get our PHD in worry.” It has become second nature to us. The bible says we are not to worry about tomorrow. I truly do not believe I know a single person that has not worried. The word of God says this, “Therefore I say unto you- Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?” (Matthew: 6-25). It goes on to talk about how God fed the birds, and how much more important are we than the birds? We are His children and HE has vowed to take care of us, give us everlasting life if we only believe on His son Jesus Christ. It just doesn't get any better than that! However, I realize how difficult it is to “not” to worry. If I could practice my, “not worrying” as much as I practice my “worry”, I would have it made! Please do not think I am picking on you because you may worry. I could probably say I graduated from the University of Worry a long time ago. I wanted to share this with you for one purpose. I want you to know how much Jesus loves you and HE will help you flunk out on this assignment. He can turn our worry into wonder. I would like to suggest a positive formula. I truly believe if we change the way we think about our situation and change the way we phrase our thoughts mentally, we can soon be on the road to a happier life. I have begun to say, “I’m concerned”, instead of, “I’m worried.” Somehow that makes me feel better mentally. I’m trying to break myself of the habit of even saying the word-worry. After a while I do believe God will help all of us begin a new outlook on all this worry thinking we are so accustomed to. You may have a way of looking at this in a much different way than I. Either way, the concept is the same for all us. God can help us all get past this and when we do we can regain our strength, become a happier person; feel mentally and physically well again. It won’t happen overnight but it will happen! God is the Great I Am, never changing. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He will see us through our gruesome encounters, and we will be free to worship “Him” as “He” so earnestly deserves. I like to think of it as a weight falling off of me. Can you imagine how wonderful that would feel? Well, I am ready to find out-how about you? I want us all to be able to sing that little song, “Don’t Worry be Happy”, and feel it coming from the heart and not just our lips. We can do it through prayer and lifting each other up in prayer to our wonderful Lord. It is an honor to share this with you and I pray each one of you can find that happiness that satan has stolen. If we stick together we can put the University of Worry out of commission. God bless you abundantly. Sincerely in Christ, Your friend always Wanda editor@thecornerstoneconnection.org "All comments/views are soley the opinion of the author" (The word satan is never capitalized in my articles.
